Snake plant, also known as Mother-in-law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata), is a beautiful perennial with pointed, lance-shaped, fleshy leaves. It can grow between 0.6 to 1.2 meters or more, with leaves horizontally marbled and banded in dark and light green. The plant produces racemes, 30-75 cm long, of tubular green or greenish-white flowers, 6-10 mm long, intermittently. Dwarf cultivars are suitable for growing in bowls and pans. The ‘Laurentii’ variety has upright leaves up to 45 cm long, horizontally marbled in mid- and dark green with broad yellow margins, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings.
Native to tropical West Africa, from Nigeria to the Congo, Mother-in-law’s Tongue is a hardy, drought-tolerant plant adapted to arid environments. It employs CAM photosynthesis, allowing it to open its stoma at night and close them during the day to reduce water loss. Known for removing toxins and purifying the air, various cultivars of Sansevieria Superba exist in different sizes, heights, and color patterns, all featuring vertical, spear-like foliage in a characteristic rosette pattern.
