Purple or pink bracts, 5-6cm long, are produced from spring to summer. Height 7-12m. Native to Brazil. ‘Lateritia’ produces brick-red bracts, 3-3.5cm long. Responsible for the impressive colours of this climber are three bracts that surround each cluster of flowers. In their middle is the actual, yellow and slim tubular flower, that usually lasts for only a few days - unlike the bracts that last for weeks. If a cluster of bracts comes to its end, the inflorescens dries out and looks like parchment. Bougainvillea is a climber with luxuriant blossom from May right through to November. Although its small, white flowers are rather insignificant, they are surrounded by showy, orange bracts at their base that produce the spectacle.
